Based on the author Lois P Frankel, nice girls’ mistake #2:
Playing the game safely and within bounds.
In my opinion, this mistake applies for both men and women and that is to take a little risk every once in awhile. To grow is to challenge and challenge does not come by playing it safe.
Risks could come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and forms. Sometimes, that risk could be money or even sometimes your colleagues. Sometimes, there is someone you believe in that you would like to hire but people around you couldn't see as how you see. How much of risk are you willing to put on them and defy the rest of your team that says otherwise.
I will be moving to another company soon. The M company I am going to does not offer year-end bonus and profit sharing like my current S company, they only offer performance bonus. Naturally, my current colleagues freaked out that I am leaving before getting my bonus. My big boss did not see my resignation letter coming because of that too. With that decision I get that they regard that as 'unwise'. Totally get it. But company M is a reputable company, so to me, passing that chance up is even 'unwise'-r.
Other than the bonus aspects, I deem the prospects of company M as great. Sure, it will come with different set of challenges and I hope the calculated risk I take pays off. I am willing to bet on myself for that performance bonuses and it makes a great sense to bet on yourself. But if it backfires? So what! I took the risk and I stand by it.
